Savoury Mince with vegetable Mash

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 brown onion finely chopped
  • 500 g lean beef mince
  •  
    2 tbsp instant beef gravy powder
  • 1 cup tomato puree
  •  
    1 cup cold water
  • 400 g potatoes peeled, diced
  • 300 g carrots peeled, diced
  • 200 g button mushrooms quartered
  •  
    150 g 1 cup of frozen peas and corn
  •  
    150 g white basmati rice

Instructions
 

  • Heat oil in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Add onion and mince. Cook, stirring with a wooden spoon to break up mince, for 6 to 8 minutes or until browned. Add gravy powder, tomato puree and cold water. Stir to combine.
  • Add potato and carrot. Season with salt and pepper. Cover. Bring to the boil. Reduce heat to medium-low. Simmer, stirring occasionally, for 20 minutes or until potato is just tender. Add mushrooms and pea mixture. Cook for 5 minutes or until heated through. Serve with rice.

Notes

Vegetarian version: 
  • Replace the mince with 50% of the weight in Quorn mince (due to it’s higher protein content).
 
1. Wheat/Gluten
  • Source in recipe: Instant beef gravy powder (many brands use wheat flour or gluten-containing thickeners)
  • Modification: Use a gluten-free, wheat-free instant gravy powder or thicken the sauce with cornflour or arrowroot.

  • Modification: Ensure gravy powder is free from barley, rye, and oats—choose a certified gluten-free product.
3. Sulphites
  • Possible source in recipe: Instant beef gravy powder, frozen peas and corn (rare, but possible in some brands as a preservative)
  • Modification: Use sulphite-free gravy powder and check frozen vegetables for sulphite preservatives.
4. Milk (Dairy), Soy, Egg, Fish, Crustacean, Mollusc, Sesame, Lupin, Peanut, Tree Nuts
  • Possible source in recipe: Instant beef gravy powder (some brands may contain these as additives, flavorings, or due to cross-contamination)
  • Modification: Choose a gravy powder clearly labeled free from all required allergens.
