Breakfast Smoothie

We are not usually a fan of smoothies especially when it is a substitute for a meal. They can be high in sugar and low in fibre which means they will get digested by the body quickly and leave you feeling hungry again very soon afterwards.

However there are some smoothies which pack a nutritional punch. These can be useful for adults and children who won’t or don’t have time to eat breakfast at home. A nutrient-packed smoothie is a much better alternative to no breakfast at all.

This particular smoothie  is really breakfast in a cup. It has a good dose of fibre which is what you want in a breakfast so that you digest it slowly and gives you the energy to keep going until lunch-time.

If however you have trouble going to the toilet regularly then you may want to consider adding in some legumes into the mix. Start with a 1/4 cup of cannellini beans or red kidney beans to boost the soluble fibre. The soluble fibre acts a little bit like a sponge and absorbs water as it travels through the large intestine which softens the ? and stimulates the bowel to keep moving.

The recipe makes two serves so you can either share with someone else in your family or save half in the fridge for tomorrow morning. Don’t be tempted to drink the lot in one sitting as you will find that you end up having more calories than if you just got out the cereal and milk.
