
Beef San Choy bau
Ingredients
1 tbsp olive oil
2 cloves garlic clove minced
1 teaspoon minced ginger
600 g lean beef mince
1 tablespoon reduced-salt soy sauce
2 tablespoons oyster sauce
3 shallots finely sliced
2 tbsp lime juice
2 cups bean sprouts
12 leaves whole lettuce butter lettuce or baby cos
0.25 cup coriander
3 cup carrots grated
Instructions
- Spray a large non-stick frying pan with olive oil and set over medium heat. Cook garlic and ginger for 30 seconds, or until fragrant. Add mince; cook, breaking up with a spoon, for 2 minutes, or until golden.
- Add the soy and oyster sauces, and cook for a further 1 minute, or until the mixture is heated through. Remove from heat. Stir through the shallots.
- Serve the mixture in whole lettuce leaves, topped with bean sprouts.
Notes
Vegetarian version:Â
To make this Beef San Choy Bau vegetarian, simply swap the lean beef mince for equal amounts of cooked brown lentils (drained and rinsed if canned). Prepare the recipe exactly as written, using the lentils in place of mince. All other ingredients and steps remain the same.

1. Soy

3. Mollusc
- Source in recipe: Oyster sauce (contains oyster extract, a mollusc)
- Modification: Use a vegetarian mushroom stir fry sauce or a mix of gluten-free soy sauce/tamari and mushroom stock for a mollusc-free version.
4. Sulphites
- Possible source in recipe: Soy sauce and oyster sauce (some brands use sulphites as preservatives)
- Modification: Use sulphite-free soy sauce and oyster sauce (check product labels).
